Magic. Magic gives a huge, undetermined modifier to the way combat goes.
More powerful magic means you inflict more casualties and take fewer yourself. To have more powerful magic, you simply need to send more reserve mana than your enemy does during the fight. Gain reserve mana by not spending it all on blessings, performing hero quests, and following actions that are similar to those of your ancestors. Most enemies will use 1-2 magic when fighting you so it is never necessary to use more than 3 mana.Treasures.

Takes extra casualties from skirmishers but stops sacrifices and Maneuvers.Evade - Highest success odds if you are charged. Few to no casualties but greatly reduce damage dealt to enemies as well. AttacksPlunder - Second most successful attack type, few casualties and injuries. Most basic offensive attack that takes cattle and goods with a chance to take Sheep, Food, and Women as captives.Burn steads - Third most successful attack type, few casualties and injuries. Minimal loot, only ever goods and cattle if anything.

Takes a section of the enemy land, usually takes 2-3 attacks to take all of the clans land. Can only be performed on enemy clans adjacent to one of your borders. Also can take goods, cattle, sheep, and prisoners.Take captives - Second most difficult attack type, high casualties and injuries. Weakens the population making attacks easier.
Captives can be freed to improve relations, killed to intimidate them (Faster and more tribute), taken as thralls for labor, or ransomed back for 5 Goods a head.Survival - Most successful attack type, fewest casualties and injuries.
